Stitchers Basic Sewing Kit*(SBK)
A basic sewing kit contains things you need and use often when sewing. This list is a
starting point and you may not need to add all of the items initially. It will depend on what
you’re working on. The important items are noted as essentials. After that, it’s up to
you. Be certain to label all items with your name.
Essentials
Scissors – Separate scissors for fabric, paper, and/or snipping threads.
Needles – Supply of needles for both the sewing machine and for hand sewing in
sizes appropriate to the project you’re working on.
Thread – High quality thread appropriate for the type and weight of your fabric. If
using the electronic 4120 Janome, Coats and Clark thread is not allowed. In general,
because there is a lot of very old Coats and Clark still around, we prefer it is not used
on any of the sewing machines purchased by Stitchers. Good thread makes for a
strong, high-quality end product.
Bobbins – Several bobbins appropriate for the machine you are using. They are not
all the same!
Fabric Markers – Frixion erasable pens are favorites, but there are many options like
tailor’s chalk, or markers with either erasable, water soluble, or disappearing ink.
Good to have a marker in a light color and one in a dark color.
Seam Ripper
Ruler and Measuring Tape
Rotary Cutter – with good blade (and several extra blades).
Pins – Straight, safety, and/or clips, depending on your project.
Sewing Gauge
Options Depending on Your Situation
Sewing Machine Manual – If you bring your own machine.
Pad and Paper – for notes
Thimble
Small Iron – Only if you want your own; there are irons available in the studio.
